“What should I wear for our session??”…a question I hear often from my Morristown, New Jersey and beyond clients.
When planning your family photo session in Morristown, Mendham, Madison, Chatham, or Randolph, you might wonder: Does what we wear really matter? Isn’t it more about the connection and love we share as a family? The answer is both yes... and no.
Yes, the emotional bond you see in your images—the giggles, snuggles, and sweet little eskimo kisses—will always be what tugs at your heart years down the line. You'll remember the way your daughter used to twirl her curls around her fingers or how your son would nuzzle into you for a kiss. The clothes may not be the first thing you notice, but they do shape the overall feel and magic of the photos.
What you wear helps set the tone. Picture this: Mom in a dreamy, flowing dress watching her little girl spin in a matching floral number. Dad relaxed, comfortable, and coordinated. Your little guy in suspenders and a bow tie—adorable as he leans in for a kiss. That’s the kind of timeless, connected story we want your gallery to tell.
Now imagine everyone in white t-shirts and blue jeans. Will it still be meaningful? Of course. But will it feel like you and reflect the joy, warmth, and personality of your family in this season of life? Probably not.

From Fashion to Family Photography — And Why What You Wear Matters
Before I was capturing sweet family moments behind the lens, I spent over 14 years designing clothing in the fashion world. I even went to college for it! Fashion has always been a huge part of who I am, and while I eventually traded my city commute for the slower, joy-filled moments of motherhood & life in Morristown, NJ—I never left my creative roots behind.
These days, I get the best of both worlds: photographing beautiful families and helping them feel amazing in what they wear. Styling sessions is one of my favorite ways to infuse a little extra magic, and I’m always happy to help lend a hand if you're feeling unsure about outfit choices.
Every client who books a session, receives my What to Wear Guide, filled with helpful do’s and don’ts to take the guesswork out of planning your wardrobe.
Some of my favorite tips?
💡 Skip the matchy-matchy: Think coordinated, not identical. Avoid putting everyone in the same color shirt and jeans. Instead, try layering textures, tones, and patterns that complement one another.
💡 Flowy dresses always win: For moms and daughters, a long, flowy dress adds movement and softness to your photos—and looks stunning in golden hour light.
💡 Choose a color palette you love: Earthy tones, soft pastels, or jewel tones can photograph beautifully. Pick 2–3 tones and build your family’s outfits around them.
💡 Comfort is key: If your child hates itchy collars or your partner feels stiff in dress shoes, it’ll show. Everyone should feel like themselves—but a little elevated.
At the end of the day, your photos are about connection. But the right outfit can help you feel confident, relaxed, and totally YOU—which makes all the difference in your session.
I’ve teamed up with Style and Select and am offering this complimentary service to my clients. It takes all the guess work out of the styling process and makes it super easy for clients to have their wardrobe vision come to life. So how does Style & Select work? It’s so simple. First, go to the their website (click here) and you will click on “Questionnaire”. Once there you will fill in my style code ALSJSTYLE. Next, you will choose your style vibe. Choose what fits your family and style best. Then you will put in the people you are styling and choose two color combos. Let’s pretend we are styling a Fall session for a family of 3. Click View Results.
This is where the fun begins! Get to styling! Choose what you love from each section for each family member by clicking on the little heart below each item. You can play around with mixing and matching until you get a look you like. Just a heads up, if you aren’t loving the selections you get when you first go on try again the next day or two. The selection of items can change depending on what is available for purchase on that particular day. You can even upload your own items that you have at home to see how it coordinates with items they have available. Once you are done choose “Send Selected Items”. An email will be sent to you with links to all your selections. From there you can either choose to purchase the items or just use them as an inspiration board and find items you have that might be similar in your own closet! The great thing about purchasing online is that they give many price range options. So let’s say the brown floral maxi is out of your price range, you can go back and choose another item that might be less expensive. Check out this helpful video to walk you through this fun service!
