What to Wear For Your Photography Session | Style and Select | New Jersey Photographer

“What should I wear for our session??”…a question I hear often from clients.

Does what you wear matter? Isn’t it all about the connection and the family bond that makes the images feel so special? Well, YES and NO. Yes, years from now…when styles change and when our children are older…we will long for that connection that we see in those images. You will be brought back to the time that your sweet daughter used to twirl her hair in her chubby fingers or when your son would give you the sweetest eskimo kisses and what you all have on may not be the first thing you notice. But what’s important while in the now is how we feel during the session. How beautiful mom feels in that gorgeous flowing dress as she watches her sweet daughter spin around in an equally beautiful dress while twirling that hair. How adorable that little boy looks in his suspenders and bow tie as he is giving you those eskimo kisses. I mean do we want to look back at our images and only see white t-shirts and jeans on everyone in the family? Definitely NO! You might get a good laugh years from now over it but you won’t feel that same connection because the first thing we will see when looking back at the images is a sea of white and denim and not the adorable little 4 year old you remember twirling in her floral dress.

I love helping out my clients with styling their wardrobe for our session. Fashion is where I started. I went to college for it and worked in the fashion industry as a clothing designer for over 14 years. It was a hard decision to leave that life but once I had my daughter I knew I wasn’t going back to working in the city and I don’t regret it for a second. But you can’t take the creative out of the girl and now that I am a family photographer I love getting to mingle my love of fashion into sessions if the family wants a little help. It’s a lot of fun!

I always send out a “What to Wear Guide” which gives some great do’s as well as some don’ts when it comes to styling your wardrobe. For example did you know that a big don’t is matching everyone exactly to each other? You would be surprised but most people think that this is the way to go when it comes to a cohesive family look.

Recently I teamed up with Style and Select and am offering this complimentary service to my clients. It takes all the guess work out of the styling process and makes it super easy for clients to have their wardrobe vision come to life. While this does make it easy, I am still there to help with any questions you have and to give you my advice on whether specific colors will work together or any other concerns you might have. I will also still be sharing that What to Wear guide with you when you book.

So how does Style & Select work? It’s so simple. First, go to the their website (click here) and you will click on “Questionnaire”. Once there you will fill in my style code ALSJSTYLE. Next, you will choose your style vibe. My favorite is the ROMANTIC BOHO because I LOVE flowing dresses for photography sessions. It brings a beautiful dreamy quality. But choose what fits your style best. Then you will put in the people you are styling and choose two color combos. Let’s pretend we are styling a Fall session for a family of 3. Click View Results.

This is where the fun begins! Get to styling! Choose what you love from each section for each family member by clicking on the little heart below each item. You can play around with mixing and matching until you get a look you like. Just a heads up, if you aren’t loving the selections you get when you first go on try again the next day or two. The selection of items can change depending on what is available for purchase on that particular day. You can even upload your own items that you have at home to see how it coordinates with items they have available. Once you are done choose “Send Selected Items”. An email will be sent to you with links to all your selections. From there you can either choose to purchase the items or just use them as an inspiration board and find items you have that might be similar in your own closet! The great thing about purchasing online is that they give many price range options. So let’s say the brown floral maxi is out of your price range, you can go back and choose another item that might be less expensive.

Below are a couple of selections I made in literally just a couple of minutes on their site. It makes shopping so easy..and fun!

Romantic Boho-Fall Colors

Casual and Charming - Neutrals

If you are still feeling overwhelmed by this, I am always here to help! You can send me over selections or I can do this whole process for you and send you over the results for you to purchase. I love doing these so it’s no bother at all!

So what do you think about this service? Will this help you take away a little bit of stress leading up to your session?
